Brad Marchand is definitely the gift that keeps on giving for appreciators of hockey humour. The Boston Bruins’ forward whiffed on a shootout attempt on Monday night, giving the Philadelphia Flyers the victory.
I included it twice and make no apologies for that! The play has become an internet sensation, with variations bouncing around Twitter like a beach ball at a Nickelback concert.
Marchand is by no means the first NHL player to make a public blunder. The question would be how would he respond to it. In 2015, Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo let in a very bad goal on his glove-side.
The very next day, he posted this.
Luongo’s ability to laugh at his mistake endeared himself to fans and neutrals alike. So, how would Marchand respond?
Marchand’s Response
In a questionable move, Marchand posted the above picture from 2011 on his Twitter page with a wink emoji. Some on the internet viewed it as an opportunity to share accomplishments of theirs from nine years ago. Still others posted pictures of a disappointed Marchand from last years Stanley Cup Finals. There are also more than enough gifs of St Louis Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo hoisting the cup to last a life-time.
Well, what’s done is done, Brad. Just turn off notifications and whatever you do, don’t reply. And if you do reply, don’t attack fans. Follow the rule of comedy, only punch down.
Things Get Uglier than a Brad Marchand Look-a-Like Contest
Brad Marchand never refuses an opportunity for a cheap shot in the actual NHL, so it should come as little surprise that he didn’t this time, choosing to punch down.
The tweet and reply are indicative of the insecure nature of Brad Marchand. And calling a fan a peasant is just brutal and punching down unnecessarily. Interestingly, the person on the end of the insult is now wearing the title as a badge of honour. This demonstrates the self-deprecating humour that Marchand clearly lacks.
Looking further at the tweet, Marchand accuses the fan of pretending to be him and then tells him to dream big, inadvertently implying he should pretend to be a better player. The inadvertent self-burns are always the funniest. Thanks again, Brad.
Brad Marchand will no doubt bounce back. The guy is known for taking a licking and keeping on ticking. Or, was that the other way around?
