Make sure to read Heisman Watch: Week 1 before you read this.
So, after the second week of college football there is still no telling who can or can’t win the Heisman besides a few superstars. Some of these players have still yet to play any real competition so in my opinion, there is no way to rank who my favorite is. So, here are how some Heisman hopefuls performed over the weekend, in no specific order.
Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin
Wisconsin is one of the teams to still not play a real competitive team but the numbers Taylor has been putting up are just crazy no matter who the competition is. This week against New Mexico, Taylor recorded 253 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. If Taylor can put up these numbers against a team like New Mexico, he obviously won’t put them up against Big Ten defenses but he will still have heisman-like numbers against good competition.
Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma
Murray leads the Sooners to another big win this week putting up 49 vs UCLA. While putting up 49 points, Murray also put up 306 passing yards, 5 total touchdowns and 1 interception all while leading his team to a 2-0 record.
Khalil Tate, QB, Arizona
Things are already not looking good for Tate and it’s only week 2. To make things even worse, Tate suffered a minor injury this week against Houston. Arizona is 0-2 and Tate only has 22 rushing yards in 2 games this season. The new coach, Kevin Sumlin, does not seem to know how to use Tate even though he coached Johnny Manziel. I hope Arizona and Khalil Tate figure things out because he really is an amazing player to watch.
Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia
Fromm didn’t have his best game but he also didn’t have his worse. Fromm only had 1 touchdown but the Bulldogs still put up 41 points. Most of these points were scored on the ground from the strong backfield that the Bulldogs have. Fromm also only had 194 yards with 15/18 passing against South Carolina.
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
The now official starter of the Crimson Tide, Tua Tagovailoa. Tua had a great game this week putting up 13/19 passing percentage, 228 passing yards, and 4 touchdowns. Another big win for Alabama by putting up 57 points, you can expect more big wins like this one in weeks to come.
Ed Oliver, DT, Houston
A huge win for Houston this week beating a power 5 team with a Heisman hopeful quarterback in Arizona. Oliver was a huge reason why Khalil Tate had such a bad game, being one of the best running quarterbacks last year and only having 8 yards against Houston means a lot about Oliver and Houston’s defense. Oliver had 3 solo tackles and 5 total tackles in this game.
Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
These first two games for Haskins have been impressive to say the least. In 2 games, Haskins has already recorded 9 touchdowns and 546 yards. Haskins led Ohio State to another win making them 2-0 and scored 129 points in only 2 games.
Will Grier, QB, West Virginia
Another win and big game for Will Grier. This guy is must-watch TV at this point. Grier had 332 passing yards and 4 touchdowns in the 52-17 win over Youngstown State.
Trace Mcsorley, QB, Penn State
A bounce-back game was much needed for Mcsorley and the Nittany Lions, and they did just that. Mcsorley led the Nittany Lions to a 51-6 win over rival Pitt, Mcsorley had 2 touchdowns and 145 yards.
Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
Love needed a better game than last week or he would have been bound to fall out of the Heisman talk all together. Love didn’t have the best game but it was certainly better than last week’s performance. Against rival USC, Love had 136 yards and 1 touchdown.
