Hey, Belly Up fans! It’s your girl, Kat AKA @TXSportsQueen! We’re coming up on another exciting time in the WWE! The Money in the Bank (MITB) pay-per-view takes place on Sunday, May 10th, with the focus on the MITB Ladder Matches. The time of year where superstars earn the opportunity of a lifetime while the reigning champs are placed on notice! If you think back to how MITB originated, it didn’t have its own event. The match started as a WrestleMania tradition! For this installment of The Queen’s Take – The Original MITB!

The Year Was 2005

WrestleMania 21 included the first Money in the Bank Ladder match that featured participants Kane, Christian, Shelton Benjamin, Chris Benoit, Edge, and the inventor of the match Chris Jericho. The concept of the match was simple – Be the first to climb the ladder and retrieve the briefcase. The inside of the case contained a contract for a championship that can be cashed in at any time, any place within the next twelve months. Only RAW superstars competed in the original match for the brand’s respective title.

It only seemed fitting that Edge, the Ultimate Opportunist himself, emerged as the winner of the first MITB match!

The Waiting Game

When I first started watching wrestling in the summer of 2005, Edge already had the briefcase. I kept asking myself, “What’s he waiting for?” That’s the brilliant part of the MITB briefcase! The winner calls all of the shots and Edge waited for the right moment!

Fast forward to January 2006!

The main event of the New Year’s Revolution pay-per-view saw John Cena defending his WWE Title in a BRUTAL Elimination Chamber match. After a successful defense, Cena sat in the middle of the ring a bloody mess when the music of a certain CEO came on. Everyone looked to the stage when Vince McMahon announced one more match and ordered for the chamber to be raised. Out from behind the smoke came Edge with the briefcase in hand! Whether you love him or hate him, you had to respect the move! He cashed in at the right time, won the title, and the rest is history!

That’s all for this installment of The Queen’s Take – The Original MITB!
